Hopefully

So, I hope to use this as a space to gather scattered thoughts, write half-formed little essays, and post very short stories that don’t seem to fit anywhere else; to write about writing, and horror, and depression, and photography, etc., all the things that interest me; and to write frequently, and consistently, although both frequency and consistency in everything have been quite a challenge of late. I want it to be something between a scrapbook and a journal, from posts shorter than tweets to posts as long as I fancy. Is that stating the obvious? I’m not quite sure yet how this thing works.

The photographer Lee Friedlander said somewhere that he photographed things to see what they looked like in a photograph. (At least, I think it was Friedlander, and I think that’s what he said.) Sometimes you write things for the same reason. You never know what you’re going to write until you write it; so much of writing emerges out of the occasion of writing. One thing I hope to do is increase such occasions. I can’t promise that what results will be in any way interesting, but I hope it will be.

I hope that the act of stating these hopes will aid in their fulfilment.

(Go on, you’ve said it now.)

I also hope to discuss all these things with whoever is interested.

The next post, later today or tomorrow, will gather links for the various things I’ve published to date, many of which are available to read online for free and some of which may be inexpensively obtained.

Then, hopefully, I’ll go from there.
